Burundi - Lake Tanganyika

Dating back more than 12,000,000 years, Lake Tanganyika is the oldest lake of the African Rifts Valleys. It is the second deepest lake after Lake Baikal in Russia. About 800 km long and 50 km wide, it reaches in depths of 1,435 meters. With 18,800 km3, this lake is the largest freshwater reservoir in Africa. It drains a catchment area of ​​about 220,000 km2. It is fed by many tributaries, the most important of which are the Rusizi (which drains Lake Kivu) and the Malagarazi which drains the waters of western Tanzania. Its outlet is the Lukuga River.
