Nicaragua - The Natural Reserve "Miskitos Keys"

The Miskitos Keys is made of an insular area and its coasts in a radius of 40kms. and a continental area formed by a strip 20kms. wide Outstanding in the Keys are its coral reefs as a preponderant geological formation on which tropical humid vegetations form. Where many species in danger of extinction still live, such as Crocodylus acutus and marine turtles, especially Chelonia mydas. The zone consists of marine phanerogamic meadows which constitute the principal known feeding area of the Caribbean turtles. Endemic species are also known to exist on two of the keys. The continental portion possesses at least three types of important rain forest areas and again endemic species and in danger of extinction for which, besides its exceptional beauty, represent a unique genetic patrimony. The combination of its qualities with the presence of the various ethnic groups (Miskitos and Garifunas) give an even greater importance to conservation of this area.

Nicaragua - Fortress of the immaculate Conception

The monument is a 17th century (1673) Military Campaign Fortress found within the limits of an area considered as a Biosphere Reserve (Indio-Maiz Reserve). It is surrounded by a town (El Castillo) of approximately 1000 inhabitants, located in a promontory of the San Juan river between the Great Lake of Nicaragua and the - Caribbean Sea. The site was part of the line of Spanish fortifications of the Caribbean established in order to fight against the pirate attacks. It was of utmost importance for the defense of the Province of Nicaragua which faced the interest of the English Crown which saught to dominate the Sea of the South.
