Cape Verde - Parc Naturel de Fogo – Chã das Caldeiras

"The Fogo Natural Park is located in the central part of the island of Fogo and consists of the volcano, the crater, the Bordeira (mountain wall) and the perimeter of the forest of Monte Velha. The park has an area of 8468.5 hectares and is located at the confluence of three municipalities: Sao Filipe (1861 ha: 22% of the Park), Santa Catarina (4237 ha: 50% of the Park) and Mosteiros (2370 ha: 28% of the Park). The Fogo volcano, which gives its name to this island, is 2829 meters high and is the highest point of Cabo Verde. The volcano is still active, with a caldera 8 km in diameter and an opening to the east. The escarpment bordering the bottom of the caldera has an almost vertical slope that reaches 1000 meters at its highest point. Inside the bordeira, there are many veins, some of which are connected with adventitious cones on the outside."

Cape Verde - La Saline de Pedra Lume

"The island of Sal, belonging to the group of islands known as "Barlovento", was discovered in 1460 by the Portuguese. Sal remained uninhabited until the late eighteenth century because of extreme aridity and was used sporadically for grazing, fishing and salt extraction. The saline is located in the northeastern part of the island comprising an area of 40 hectares. The peculiarity of the site is its formation in the crater of an extinct volcano at 39 meters above sea level and 1500 meters of a protected bay. In the past, the crater was in contact with the sea at its north side by natural channels allowing the infiltration of water. Due to the evaporation of this water, a deposit of rock salt estimated at more than fifty million tons has formed.

The island has been highly coveted by European vessels for salting meat and fish, as part of European expansion and transoceanic voyages. Indeed, the extraction of salt was the determining factor for the permanent occupation of the island having as inspiration the rich merchant Manuel António Martins, who around 1796, with families from the island of Boavista and slaves from the west coast, settled in the town of Pedra de Lume."

Cape Verde - Cova e Montantes de Ribeiras da Torre et do Paul

"The Natural Park of Cova, Paúl and Ribeira da Torre (PNCPRT) is located on the north side of the island of Santo Antão, more precisely in the north-east, in a crossroads area of the three municipalities, including: Porto Novo 15 , 1% (316 ha), Paúl 42.6% (891 ha) and Ribeira Grande 42.3% (885 ha). The minimum altitude in the park is about 400 meters in the area of Xoxô and the maximum altitude corresponds to Pico da Cruz, with 1585 meters. The park is dominated in the highest areas (above 1000m) by a volcanic crater (Cova), by forest areas of Pinus, Eucalyptus and Grevillea, by peaks and steep areas and by cliffs that end in deep valleys overlooking the sea (Ribeira da Torre and Paúl). The existing microclimate at the site presents a combination of factors such as altitude, exposure of slopes or slopes, and hidden precipitation that promotes the development of various plants with a focus on native vegetation and agricultural practice."
