Djibouti - Les Gravures Rupestre d’Abourma

The Abourma rock engravings site is located in the north of the Republic of Djibouti, in the Makarrassou massif of the Tadjourah region. It is the largest in the country. This exceptionally rich site of Abourma, contains a rock art from prehistory. It delivers about three (3) km of rock engravings, a variety of themes that reflect the behavior, the social stratification and the organization of a pastoral life gone. These represented images carry a variety of messages: the man in his societal environment, the man / nature interaction, the man / animal cohabitation, the sometimes warlike behaviors. Thousands of sometimes very detailed scenes of wild and domestic animals as well as those of actions, notably those of men practicing hunting and fighting are represented. This diversity of themes and styles reveal several millennia of engravings and extend over 1500m of basaltic walls.
