Morocco - City of Lixus
The city of Lixus is, according to many ancient authors, one of the first cities of the western Mediterranean. It is located at the mouth of Wadi Lukkos, opposite the modern city of Larache. The excavations that have been undertaken have shown that the site has been occupied since the 8th century BC until the 14th century AD The excavated areas touched a religious area made up of numerous temples, a district of pre-Roman and Roman settlement, an industrial complex of cured meats (one of the most important in the Mediterranean basin) ... The stratigraphy of the site includes five major phases: Phoenician, Punic, Mauritanian, Roman and post-Roman and a final Islamic phase.
