Burundi - The traditional Mugamba rugo
As a hilly country, Burundi has 11 traditional regions that stand out from each other in climatic and orographic terms. The Mugamba region is located on the watershed sharing area of the Nile and Congo Basins. This region is characterized by high terrain (2,300 m on average) and annual temperatures between 14 ° and 17 ° C.
Given the low temperatures in the region, the population has adopted adobe constructions that allow them to protect themselves against these low temperatures and high humidity.
This rugo is a unit of dwellings (inzu) of all members of the same family and is surrounded by a fence (urugo) made of bamboo. He understands :
The main house, round in shape, is surrounded by two large enclosures delimiting the front yard (urugo) and the backyard (ikigo). The forecourt (ikirugu) serves as a livestock yard. A focus (igicaniro) in the center protects these domestic animals against flies. On the side, there is a mast (icishinzo) against which the cows rub themselves. In each enclosure, there are dwellings of smaller dimensions.
