Burundi - The royal residence of Burundi: The case of Gishora

Burundi was organized as a monarchy from the 15th century until the proclamation of the Republic of Burundi on November 28, 1966. At the time of this monarchy, each king (umwami) had capitals (Mbuye, Muramvya, Kiganda, Humure, Bukeye ...) scattered throughout the country. They were more concentrated in the Muramvya area. At the end of each year, the royal court organized the sorghum planting festival (Umuganuro) which included, among others, the Gishora ritualists. The royal estate of Gishora was founded by Mwami Ntare Rugamba in the first half of the 19th century after his victory over rebel leader Ntibirangwa. It is located on the top of Gishora hill in Giheta commune, 7 km from Gitega town.
