Uruguay - Peñarol Quarter: The Historic Old Town and the Industrial Railway Landscape

"The historical district of Peñarol, with its industrial and railway landscape, is made up of groups of buildings dating back to the last decade of the nineteenth century, when the British company Central Uruguay Railway transferred the workshops and the railway station which before were in the Bella Vista neighborhood. At present, Peñarol is still inhabited by railway employees, among others. In a circuit of seven blocks, heavily strewn with parks, are located the residences of the staff of the hierarchy, the housing workers, a bridge on the railway, the railway workshops (mechanical, forge, foundry, sawmill, carpentry, workshop painting, shipping and printing), the office building, the train station, a social center (the Center Artesano, former trade school), a theater and movie theater, a general store or General Store , the doctor's house and the facilities in which the British played cricket, polo and tennis. This is a total of 33.000m2 built in an area of ​​24 hectares."
