Switzerland - Bridge over the Salgina Gorge

"The nominated property includes the road bridge over the Salgina Gorge between Schiers and Schuders in Graubünden and its immediate environment. This work of art was made following an architectural competition launched in 1928, three years after the lifting of the ban on the movement of private vehicles in the canton of Graubünden. Designed by the Swiss civil engineer Robert Maillart (1872-1949), it consists of a box arch with three joints in reinforced concrete with a length of 90 m, the largest arch of this type existing at the time of its construction. With a total length of 132 m, the bridge straddles the Salgina Gorge at a height of 93 m above the water, requiring the construction of a particularly aerial scaffolding. The arch, 6 m wide at the ends and only 3 m at its center, draws on the vertical plane a curve of great elegance. The exact boundaries of the perimeter and its buffer zone still need to be specified."
