Portugal - Roman Production Centre of Fish Salting and Conservation in Tróia

The property proposed for inscription on the World Heritage Tentative List is the largest saltfish production center in the Roman Empire, known as the Roman Ruins of Tróia, a vast ensemble of Roman remains located on the peninsula. of Tróia, which were classified as a National Monument in 1910 (Decree of 16 June). A new decree of 1968 defined its Special Zone of Protection (ZEP) and zone non aedificandi (DG, 2nd Series, Nº 155 of 02/07/1968) and the coordinates of this one were specified in 1992 (Portaria nº 40 / 92 of January 22). In 2009 the non aedificandi area was altered by Portaria nº 1170/2009 of November 5th which defined its new coordinates. The site still benefits from environmental protection as it is located in the Natura 2000 network (Site PTCON0011- Estuary of Sado (Res.Min. # 142/97, of August 28)) and in the National Ecological Reserve (REN) (Figure 1). It is also integrated into the environmental management system of TROIA RESORT, certified according to ISO 14001 since 2005 and registered in the EMAS Community Environmental Management and Audit System since 2008.
