Natural environment
This area of great biodiversity contains part of the Lacandona Selva - priority conservation area - and presents a variety of physical and biological conditions that include massive belt ecosystems that are not usually found in other sites: forests flood pristine and virgin forests with evergreen leaves.
The main physiographic units that have been identified in this region are: the sierras and gorges of the Perlas and Santo Domingo rivers, the Corolita-Jalapa mountain system, the San Quintin valley, the Santo Domingo valleys, the sierras of the North, the alluvial plain of the Usumacinta - Lacan-Tún region and the Lacanjá valley.
The region comprises 45% of the protected natural areas of the State of Chiapas, including: the Naha flora and fauna protection area, the Metzabok flora and fauna protection area, the Protection of flora and fauna Chankin, Bonampak natural monument, Yaxchilan natural monument, Montes Azules biosphere reserve, Lacan - Tún biosphere reserve and La cojolita communal reserve.
