Mauritania - Azougui Cultural Landscape
The cultural landscape of Azougui is made up of several cultural structures whose existence is closely linked to the environment, and the latter is also either a cultural production or a natural phenomenon that now bears the imprint of all the cultural values it houses. The essential components of this landscape are: The Oasis The appearance of the Oasis phenomenon is closely linked to the creation of Azougui, whose vestiges testify to this flourishing past, in a more and more desert environment no longer accepting the other forms of agriculture. This economic activity has rapidly become a cultural form of the daily life of the people; the latter have created around the oasis most of their myths and legends that they continue to root in their collective memory and live in the form of festivities related to the annual season of dates. This palm grove, the oldest in the region, now has more than twenty thousand palm trees and still retains the traditional system of canalization and exploitation.
