Chad - Zakouma National Park
Zakouma National Park is located in southeastern Chad. It covers an area of nearly three hundred and five thousand (305,000) hectares. The nearest agglomeration, Am-Timarn, capital of the Salamat Region is 45 km from its main entrance. Established in 1963, Zakouma National Park is now one of the last wildlife sanctuaries in Sahelian Africa, still home to decent numbers of large mammals. It is located 800 km from N'Djamena by the most direct route through Massaguet, Ngoura, Moyto, Bokoro, Mongo and Abdouïa. Its main entrance (Goz Djerat) is 45 km from Am-Timam, chief town of Barh Azoum prefecture. It covers an area of three hundred and five thousand (305,000) hectares. It has a very good vegetation, an important hydrographic network, a dense and diversified fauna of which forty four (44) species of large mammals and two hundred fifty (250) species of birds and eighty four (84) woody species. Two great geological units have been distinguished by the specialists and which are: - the rocky appointments of the base, the cuirasses and the old sedimentary, etc. - Quaternary sedimentary formations.
