History of the Palace of the Princes Bishops
The first episcopal palace was built by Notger (972-1008) at the same time as the cathedral facing it. The Prince Bishop gives the same importance to both buildings. The building was certainly built in half-timbering, on a stone level. It will be destroyed by a fire in 1185.
It is rebuilt in 1188. The whole is organized around 3 courts, the south-east facade of Romanesque style, four towers block the first courtyard, two dungeons protect the whole. In 1449, the Romanesque facade is enriched with a large Gothic staircase. At the same time, stables are built.
