France - Cathedral of Saint Denis

"The cathedral of Saint-Denis, formerly royal basilica of Saint-Denis, occupies a unique place in the history of Gothic architecture, each of the major stages of its construction constitutes an artistic and technical revolution. It also occupies a very special place in national history since the thirteenth century to the French Revolution the church was the royal necropolis. Saint-Denis was in the late empire on the Roman road which ran from Lutece in Beauvais. A large cemetery grew around the remains of Saint-Denis, first bishop of Paris. The excavations confirmed the existence of a basilica in the Merovingian period, which was richly endowed by King Dagobert. Many basilicas succeeded on the premises during the Carolingian period and Capetian. It Abbot Suger who decided reconstruction.
