Mali - The Komoguel Mosque
Of Sudanese architectural style, the Great Mosque of Mopti, commonly known as Komoguel Mosque, has an area of 12 to 76 sq. The construction of the mosque goes back to 1933-1935. It was built in the place of another dating back to 1908.
The Mosque extends over almost 100m² and measures 15m high. It consists of two parts: the first is covered and the second is the yard. The building is surrounded by a wall whose height varies between 2m40 and 2m90. The roof is carried by massive pillars aligned parallel to the wall of the qibla (the indication of the direction of Mecca).
The Komoguel Mosque hosts the largest number of worshipers in Mopti during the hours of prayer, especially during the Friday prayers. This unifying character makes this religious monument an instrument for maintaining and strengthening social bonds.
