Mali - Friday Grand Mosque of Niono
The Grand Friday Mosque of Niono is the work of a team of masons from Djenné. Built in 1948, the structure was expanded between 1955 and 1956 with the addition of 6 (six) transverse bays on the south side. It knows another ultimate extension of the west side in 1959. The building currently occupies a total area of 1,800 m². It includes the following elements:
- the main room which covers 658 m²;
- the mausoleum where the first Imam of the Mosque rests;
- the prayer room for women with two levels: the ground floor plus a floor.
- Annexes.
Inside, there are 68 pillars supporting a vaulted ceiling, made of rônier wood. The main materials used for the construction of this mosque are: mud bricks, clay mortar mixed with rotten rice bran.
