Tunisia - The Jebel Tebaga Marine Permian

The Permian, the last period of the Paleozoic era (-290 Ma to -250 Ma) was marked by the largest mass extinction in the history of the Earth. From the end of the primary era, the Earth's configuration has undergone a major change with the appearance of a large rift that split the Pangea in two, allowing an East-West branch of the sea to develop which will expand during the secondary era and give rise to a new ocean: the Tethys. The Jebel Tebaga of Medenine, directional monoclinal NE - SW extends about 12 km. This site is easily accessible by the MC 104 road connecting Medenine to Dkhelet Toujene. It is formed by carbonate and siliciclastic rocks dated from the upper Permian. This Permian series is unconformably covered by Middle-Upper Jurassic series and Upper Albian series. Fusulines and the only trilobite in Tunisia: Pseudophillipsia azzouzi, are fossil organisms that could not survive the major biological crises of the Primary - Secondary passage.
