Togo - Agglomeration Aného-Glidji

The ancient city, whose construction dates back to the late 17th and early 18th centuries, was founded by Guin immigrants who settled here following the wars with the Ashanti of present-day Ghana. Like the natives, the Guin imposed their language and created an original civilization. The situation of the city, formerly known as Petit Popo, bordered by the sea predisposed it to trade with the West: slave trade, of which Ouidah in Benin was one of the main ports of embarkation, and commercial exchanges. Under German colonization and until 1897, Aného became the capital of this "model colony" that was Togo. An administrative city was built beyond the lagoon, in the district of Zébé.
