Benin - Underground village of Agongointo-Zoungoudo
During the construction of a ring road, the Danish company DANISA discovered in February 1998 the underground village of Agongointo-Zougoundo consisting of a series of cellars of the German bunker genre, made of tropical ferruginous soil and presenting different geometrical shapes. . Located about 10 meters below ground, these cellars have been designed in the light of specific plans to be used as living quarters (living rooms, bedrooms, kitchen rooms, wells etc) and refuge to warriors. According to the information available, these houses were built since the 16th century under the reign of King DAKODONOU (second King of Abomey). In these underground constructions, there is a normal temperature and odor as well as a cleanliness of the premises.
